MY STORY
A Dream Rooted in Service. A Mission Inspired by Hope.
My name is Autumn Willis, and I am the founder of Dancing for the Cure. I grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, with a desire to do something meaningful with my life. Throughout my journey, I have always been drawn to opportunities that allow me to serve others, bring people together, and make a difference beyond myself.
My commitment to service began during my three years in Army JROTC. Through food banks, community service projects, and participating in naturalization ceremonies, I developed a deep appreciation for what it means to serve something greater than yourself. Those experiences helped shape my character, strengthened my love for the Army, and planted the foundation for the future I hope to pursue.
Today, I am working toward an undergraduate degree in Integrative Health Sciences, with aspirations of continuing my education through the United States Army's medical school pathway. My ultimate dream is to become an Army cardiothoracic surgeon. I hope to dedicate my life to caring for patients with serious heart and chest conditions, serving our country as a military physician, and giving families more time, more memories, and more moments with the people they love.
For me, this dream is about more than earning a medical degree or pursuing a specialty. It is about the responsibility that comes with being trusted with someone's health, the privilege of caring for people during some of their most difficult moments, and the opportunity to make a difference when it matters most. I know that the road ahead will require years of dedication, sacrifice, and hard work, but it is a future I am determined to pursue.
As I continue working toward that dream, I wanted to find a way to begin making a difference now, even before I step into a hospital as a physician. That is where Dancing for the Cure was born.
I wanted to create something that brought people together in a way that was exciting, memorable, and meaningful. An evening where individuals could share their talents, celebrate the art of dance, and unite behind a cause much bigger than themselves. With eight competitors, four judges, and a variety of dance styles, this event will combine the excitement of competition with the heart of philanthropy, all in support of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
I chose to support St. Jude because I believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up, experience life's milestones, and make memories with the people who love them. The work of supporting children and families facing serious illnesses is a mission worth bringing people together for.
Although I hope to one day make a difference in the operating room as an Army cardiothoracic surgeon, I believe we do not have to wait until we reach our dreams to start helping others. We can begin with the opportunities we have today, the talents we possess, and the communities around us.
Dancing for the Cure is my way of putting that belief into action.
My hope is that this event becomes more than one evening of performances. I hope it inspires generosity, creates lasting connections, and reminds everyone involved that even the smallest contribution can be part of something extraordinary.
Thank you to every competitor, sponsor, judge, volunteer, and supporter who helps bring this vision to life. You are helping turn one person's dream into a community effort with a purpose.
One Stage. Eight Competitors. One Champion. One Incredible Cause.
With gratitude,
Autumn Willis
